Chyornye Zemli ("Black Lands)" is a state natural biosphere reserve, established on June 11, 1990. The only testing ground in Russia for the study of steppe, semi-desert and desert landscapes, as well as the protection and study of the Kalmyk saiga population. The reserve includes two different territories - in the main site "Chernye Zemli" the saiga population is being protected and restored, and the site "Manych-Gudilo Lake" is a wetland of international importance, there are nesting and wintering grounds for many rare species of waterfowl and near-water birds.
